Abstract In September, 1962, the German Ophthalmological Society presented, at Hamburg, their third series of lectures on development and advances in ophthalmology. Lecturers include ophthalmologists from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Spain, and Italy. The United States is represented by Walsh and Lindenberg who describe changes in the optic nerve from indirect trauma. There are far too many articles to permit discussion of each one. The material presented is nearly all clinical, and in many instances similar discussions by the same authors have appeared in various ophthalmic journals. As is often the case in symposia, there is considerable variation in the extent to which different ophthalmic problems are discussed. For instance, there is no paper on advances in the surgery of retinal detachment, and the chapter on plastic surgery, while profusely illustrated, scarcely mentions the use of a sliding graft to repair lid defects.
