Morphological Study on Alloxan-Induced Cataract

Morphological Study on Alloxan-Induced Cataract Abstract Previous work on experimental cataract carried out in these laboratories dealt with morphological aspects of the problem and emphasized the sequence of epithelial and fiber pathology as well as the correlation of the histological and cytological changes with biomicroscopic observations in four types of experimental cataract. Experiments on alloxan-diabetic animals were not included in this work in view of the difference in the approach in the alloxan series. Modification comprised low-magnification viewing under the dissecting microscope and observation of the effects of the cataractogenic agent when it had been introduced into the vitreous chamber of the rabbit. Material and Experimental Procedure The rat served as experimental animal in the main part of the study. The males of 46 litters of Sprague-Dawley rats (five animals per litter) from the NIH stock were from 23 to 25 days old at the onset of the experiment.
