MITOTIC AND WOUND-HEALING ACTIVITIES IN THE RAT CORNEAL EPITHELIUM: Influence of Various Hormones and Endocrine Glands

MITOTIC AND WOUND-HEALING ACTIVITIES IN THE RAT CORNEAL EPITHELIUM: Influence of Various Hormones... Abstract THE PURPOSE of the present study was to discover whether removal of various endocrine glands or the administration of various hormones and related substances influenced mitotic and wound-healing activities in the rat's corneal epithelium. The methods of assay of these activities previously described * were used in this study. 1. HYPOPHYSECTOMY Young rats hypophysectomized by the Hormone Assay Laboratory † were obtained for this study. The animals reached our laboratory three days after operation in apparently good condition. Two weeks after operation, six animals were killed and their eyes removed for mitosis counts. The results shown in Table 1 yielded an average count of 53 ± 8 per standard area of cornea. This is less than half the number of mitoses normally found in the same standard counting area and represents a very significant reduction in mitosis number.Since the number of mitoses might be reduced either by a diminution of References 1.
