Abstract The first edition of this book having appeared twenty years ago, this, the fourth, edition requires little more than a book notice. For many years it has been a standard work and probably is familiar to every reader of the Archives. The author has made a consistent effort to bring the various phases of the subject quite up to date, and in this he has very well succeeded although, as he states in the preface, unable fully to consult recent literature outside of Germany. In places this lack is so noticeable as to be a real defect. Among the newer questions considered he mentions the curability of general paresis, syphilis of the third generation, family syphilis, the influence of the war on syphilis and the nervous system, and investigations relating to the spinal fluid.
