NEUROLOGICAL REVIEW A Family of Neurodegenerative Disorders? Elan D. Louis, MD, MSc ssential tremor (ET) is the most common pathologic tremor in humans. The tradi- tional view of ET, as a monosymptomatic condition, is being replaced by an apprecia- tion of the spectrum of clinical features, with both motor and nonmotor elements. These E features are not distributed homogeneously across patients. In addition, postmortem studies are now demonstrating distinct structural changes in ET. There is growing evidence that ET may be a family of diseases rather than a single entity. Furthermore, this aging-associated, pro- gressive disorder is associated with neuronal loss and postmortem changes that occur in tradi- tional neurodegenerative disorders. Arch Neurol. 2009;66(10):1202-1208 Essential tremor (ET), the most common studies of the pathology of ET have dem- pathologic tremor in humans, is among the onstrated several distinctive structural 6-10 more ubiquitous neurologic diseases, with changes, including neuronal loss.
