Abstract This volume represents the latest addition to the proceedings of the Epilepsy International symposia and chronicles the 13th Epilepsy International Symposium held in Kyoto, Japan, in September 1981. The symposium was organized thematically, and the book follows these subdivisions, which include classification of epileptic seizures and the epilepsies, seizure manifestations and long-term monitoring, etiologic and preventive aspects of epilepsy in the developing nervous system, myoclonic seizures in infancy and childhood, new diagnostic approaches, epilepsy and behavior, precipitation and inhibition of epileptic seizures, antiepileptic drugs, biochemical basis of epilepsy, cerebral lateralization, the effects of parental epilepsy on the developing child, epilepsy rehabilitation, and experimental models. The volume thus represents a cross section of current concepts including basic, clinical, and behavioral scientific endeavors in the field. An elegant introduction by the congress president, Dr Akimoto, outlines the similarities in the eastern and western histories of epilepsy.
