Professor Schaefer contributes a short survey of circulatory physiology and the mechanisms that maintain blood pressure. While this chapter is scholarly and up-to-date, it does not contain any information that has not already been compiled in standard textbooks of physiology. A survey of papers dealing with psychoanalytical successes in the treatment of hypertension introduces the main section of this book. The bulk of this volume is devoted to 19 case histories of patients with hypertension treated by psychoanalysis. Although the initial aim of this exercise was to show that analytical methods are of therapeutic value in hypertension, in the end it was obvious, that this was not so. A short section discusses pyschodynamic aspects and another elaborates on the Jungian view of the "psychological structure of hypertensive patients."
