Abstract In the preface the author makes the following statement: "This monograph deals with the anatomy, ultrastructure, and physiology of the mammalian motor endplate and with its alterations resulting from laboratory experimentation and the process of disease. Its purpose is to bring together information from numerous sources to encourage further study of this structure in several still obscure neuromuscular diseases. Another objective is to illustrate the great potential value of investigations of ultrastructure in pathology." Dr. Zacks also comments in his preface that he has taken the privilege of the essayist and has included his personal opinions and speculations to lighten "what otherwise would be a dry recital of anatomic description and formal scientific analysis." With these goals in mind the author has divided his book into seven chapters dealing with (1) anatomy, (2) histochemistry, (3) fine structure, (4) physiology, (5) experimental pathology, (6) pathology, and (7) unsolved problems.
