Abstract The text represents an extensive revision and reorganization of Dr. Elliott's second edition of his Textbook of the Nervous System which appeared in 1954. Since this book bears a new title, it is not referred to as a third edition, though that is what it represents. According to the author, a textbook should include "what a student can reasonably encompass in a standard college course and what the future general practitioner should routinely bear in mind." The reorganized text is divided into six parts presumably based upon the author's method of teaching. Some teachers may find this division of material awkward, and others may object to the inclusion of the autonomic nervous system and hypothalamus under the division entitled "Accessory Systems and Structures."
