Abstract This book is the fourth volume to be published in the "Benchmark Series on Human Physiology." It contains a selection of manuscripts that left permanent landmarks in the development of man's knowledge in the field of cardiovascular physiology. In the introduction, Dr Warren states that "I tried to include those papers which incorporate the essence of the contributions and which best describes what the authors were thinking." This purpose is admirably met by the present publication. The papers included here deal with both the development of new methods as well as the impact of conceptual ideas. The book has five major sections and contains a total of 49 original manuscripts. Each section has comments by the editor. The first section has a collection of papers on cardiac catheterization and on determination of cardiac output by such giants as Frossmann, Fick, Cournand, and Hamilton.
