Abstract This is the first volume of a planned series of manuals dealing with radiation protection in hospitals and general medical practice. The study was sponsored by the International Labor Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the World Health Organization. It deals with radiation protection of patients, occupationally-exposed persons, and the public as a whole. The work of the two authors, reviewed by the entire pleiad of international experts and by several trade union organizations both from Europe and the United States, has resulted in an outstanding and concise manual. It will be of great interest and use to all those who have some responsibility in the subject area. After a brief but well-written introduction on basic radiophysics and radiobiology, principal objectives of radiation protection are considered. Planning of radiation facilities, design of equipment and procedures, and shielding principles are outlined and schematically illustrated.
