Abstract This most recent volume by Irving S. Cooper is a magnificent book from the point of view of medical artistry and photography. It is filled with photographs of patients and drawings based on the photographs. Anatomic tracts, pathologic material, and illustrations of surgical technique occupy a good part of the book. The volume is divided into six sections: (1) "Hypertonus and Hyperkinesis of Parkinson's Disease," (2) "Bilateral Thalamic Surgery in Parkinson's Disease," (3) "Intention Tremor," (4) "Dystonia," (5) "Hemiballismus and Hemichorea," and (6) Surgical Treatment of the Dyskinesias." Cooper has been a pioneer in concert with A. E. Walker, R. Myers, and P. C. Bucy in the field of surgery for Parkinson's disease and other dyskinesias. He has without doubt the most experience of all with basal ganglia and thalamic surgery. He has also operated upon patients with intention tremor of an hereditofamilial nature, Wilson's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
