Abstract A firmly entrenched human tradition is to honor one's fellow man by occasions of celebration and hero worship. In our time of widespread neurosis and frustration, the capacity for admiration seems benumbed, much as the capacity for wonder, for the mere expression of curiosity, is bred out of us in spite of our system of education. In our time praise and admiration are reserved for those who have died. It is rare for hero worship to find as elegant and delightful an expression for the living as is set forth in the tributes to W. W. Francis. In ways which far exceed the usual faint feeling of kinship of cousins, Francis, Osler's cousin, has come to embody the Osler tradition.
