Castellani's Paint Without Fuchsin

Castellani's Paint Without Fuchsin This article is only available in the PDF format. Download the PDF to view the article, as well as its associated figures and tables. Abstract To the Editor.— Drs Leyden and Kligman (Archives 115:675, 1979), like everyone else, find the stain of Castellani's paint objectionable.Forty years ago, Dr Harold M. Johnson, who trained at the University of Pennsylvania, told me that it could be made up without the fuchsin, and I have used it that way ever since, with complete satisfaction. It has produced, on many occasions, the same dramatic clearing of candidal intertrigo we had learned to expect from using the standard formula.Since carfusin is no longer manufactured and the formula for Castellani's paint is not easy to find, here is one acceptable formulation: 30 mL of aqueous phenol (5%); 3 mL of alcohol (95%); 0.3 g of boric acid; 1.5 mL of acetone; and 3 g of resorcinol.Of course, it is sensible to have a pharmacist make 100 times this amount and dispense your own in 30- or 60-mL bottles, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Dermatology American Medical Association
