Abstract To the Editor.— Seventeen patients with chronic psoriasis have responded favorably to abrasive treatment. Fine sandpaper was used for a few days; then, a medium grade was substituted. Some oozing usually occurs for a few days. The 3M and Armour brands of sandpaper are acceptable.Various ointments are applied after the scales are removed by the sandpaper. These include: fluocinolone acetonide; anthralin; ammoniated mercury; coal tar-water miscible; and combinations of salicylic acid and coal tar.The oldest patient was 70 years old, who had diffuse chronic psoriasis for 30 years (author). The hands were severely involved, causing considerable embarrassment. Some of the patients had received potassium arsenite (Fowler's solution); aminopterin sodium; methotrexate, and cortisone orally with temporary relief. One 40-year-old patient had severe psoriasis limited to the palms. She had been treated by x-ray, along with topical applications by two different dermatologists with no significant response. She had relatively deep fissures with severe itching. She treated herself several times a day. The photos indicate her progress (Fig 1 through 3). She has continued to improve.
