Abstract The great accumulation of knowledge in the basic science of dermatology in the past two decades underlies the great difficulty of one or a few physicians writing a truly comprehensive textbook. This book brings together the expertise of 143 contributors who, with only a few notable exceptions, are nationally and internationally recognized authorities of their field. These individuals have intimate knowledge of the fundamentals of their subject and they express it well and usually in great detail. The book as a whole gives one the impression of a compilation of monographs, but I am not particularly bothered by the resulting loss of coherence. Some of the specific material, such as that in the chapter "Reactions to Light," has not been put together heretofore, and there was previously no single source of reference for the beginning student of photobiology. Chapters on replacement kinetics, epidermal protein, the pigmentary system, lipogenesis, immunology, plasma http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Dermatology American Medical Association
