Abstract The National Center for Health Statistics is planning a National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) to be conducted among a sample of practicing physicians across the country. The purpose of the NAMCS is to collect objective, quantitative information measuring and describing ambulatory medical care services rendered and received in the United States. Information resulting from the survey will be useful in such areas as planning and organizing health services, assessing health facility and manpower requirements, and determining modifications in the objectives of medical education. The only reliable source of this information is the practicing physician. The full cooperation of every physician selected in the sample is crucial to the success of the survey. Strong support for the NAMCS has been expressed by the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Medical Association, and other major medical associations, professional societies, and individual practitioners.
