DERMATOLOGIC SOCIETY OF GREATER NEW YORK

DERMATOLOGIC SOCIETY OF GREATER NEW YORK Abstract Traumatic Tattoo Due to Silver Salt. Presented by Norman Orentreich, MD, and Hillard H. Pearlstein, MD. The right eye of a 22-year-old white man was removed as a result of an injury suffered during an explosion of acetylene and silver nitrate five years ago. Three months after the explosion mottled areas of pigmentation became apparent on his face (Fig 1), neck, and hands. Dermabrasion of the face was performed three years ago without success. Discussion Hillard H. Pearlstein, MD: At the time of the unsuccessful dermabrasion I noticed that the implanted pigment extended into the subcutaneous fat. I think that the blue-black pigment is a silver salt. An attempt will be made to confirm this by chemical analysis. If it is a silver salt, I would consider the use of a chelating agent, perhaps topically applied in a vehicle with good penetrating properties.Helen O. Curth, MD: Shaving with a References 1.
