BALANITIS XEROTICA OBLITERANS: Report of a Case

BALANITIS XEROTICA OBLITERANS: Report of a Case Abstract BALANITIS xerotica obliterans, originally described by Stühmer1 in 1928, was defined by Laymon and Freeman2 as "a chronic, progressive, atrophic, sclerosing process of the glans and prepuce leading to urethral stenosis." Madden's report3 in 1935 of 3 patients with this condition was the first to appear in the American literature. From 1941 until early 1947 at least 28 more cases were described in our literature4 (table). It is probable that the same condition had previously been described under the names of kraurosis penis,4b balanosclerosis5 and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus.6 Freeman and Laymon summarized these reports in a comprehensive review of the literature in 1941.4b These authors demonstrated that this disease may occur at any age between 22 and 67, that it is not necessarily associated with circumcision or any other operative procedure, that it may be accompanied with lesions on the body References 1.
