The Role of Burow's Solution in DermatologyNew York State J. Med., 40
Abstract Solution of aluminum acetate N. F. (Burow's solution) is a clear, colorless, weakly acid liquid with a faintly acetous odor and a sweetish, astringent taste. It contains in each 100 cc. not less than 4.8 Gm. and not more than 5.8 Gm. of aluminum acetate. According to the sixth edition of the National Formulary, the solution is prepared as follows: Dissolve each salt separately in 525 cc. of water, and mix the cold solutions by pouring the lead acetate solution in a thin stream, with constant stirring, into the aluminum sulfate solution. Set the mixture aside in a cold place (about 10° C.) for 24 hours. Siphon off 1,000 cc. of the clear liquid, or, if necessary, transfer the magma to a filter and add sufficient water through the magma to make the product measure 1,000 cc. Note: This solution should be dispensed only when clear. The usefulness of solution of aluminum acetate N. F. in the treatment of certain cutaneous diseases is well known to most dermatologists. In an excellent review of the role of this solution in dermatology, Combes1 ascribed its virtues to its buffer action, its astringent and antiphlogistic properties and its antiseptic action.
