Controversies & Conversations in Cutaneous Laser Surgery

Controversies & Conversations in Cutaneous Laser Surgery For practicing laser surgeons, Controversies & Conversations in Cutaneous Laser Surgery bridges the wide gulf between day-to-day practice and textbooks or formal journal articles. This book delivers exactly what its title states, a series of concise and easy-to-read summaries of the most important clinical issues faced by anyone who uses lasers on the skin. The work is multi-authored and distilled from a highly interactive international laser symposium headlined by the leading laser gurus from around the world. As in the symposium, there is a no-holds-barred approach to the chapters and discussion summaries where all authors are rigorously challenged to defend their views and specific techniques. In fact, the very best parts of the book are the transcribed interactions between the experts, all of which are sprinkled with clinical tips that are not otherwise found in print. This book definitely captures the spirit and essence of the controversies. Virtually all established and emerging aspects of lasers and the skin are covered in a relatively small volume divided into specific indications such as ablative and nonablative resurfacing, vascular lesions, hair removal, resistant tattoos, psoriasis, scars, and pigmented lesions. Techniques for skin cooling, wound care, incisional surgery, and optical diagnosis are also highlighted. Good balance is achieved by the inclusion of discussions on nonlaser devices that compete with lasers, and by the inclusion of pearls for avoiding and managing adverse outcomes. A few of the chapters are limited by being a bit too narrowly focused on small clinical studies or case series involving a specific device. Fortunately, these are complemented by the broader discussion summaries and critiques that are presented in each subsection of the book. For a paperback volume, we were pleasantly surprised to see a generous number of good clinical photographs, most of which of sufficient quality to demonstrate and evaluate the concepts under discussion. A "must read" for anyone who now uses lasers to treat the skin, this book represents a relatively easy way to bring yourself up-to-speed on all the key devices and techniques used in clinical practice. It includes a lot of information that is simply not published elsewhere. For novices, Controversies & Conversations in Cutaneous Laser Surgery will be especially useful for going beyond the "which laser should I get?" dilemma to actually knowing what really important questions to ask. And in case you need another good reason to take a break from the clinic, we also highly recommend the annual symposium to you.
