An apparatus is described which permits the study of Raman spectra in the temperature range from 0 to −180°C. Its horizontal position avoids the use of a prism needed with vertical arrangements and it is easily placed into the present arrangement of light sources used in this laboratory.
Five new alternating‐current mercury arcs between oxide‐coated tungsten electrodes in fused‐quartz are described and the spectral intensity of each lamp is tabulated. Several points of superiority over the familiar mercury‐pool cathode types are discussed.
