A general theory of innovation is proposed based on an analysis of the common characteristics and dynamics of two innovation archetypes, natural selection and the scientific method, along with innovation in other contexts such as business and technology. This Valuable Novelty Theory posits a probabilistic pattern of innovation called the Innovation Cycle and a complimentary pattern called the Status Quo Cycle. This approach is designed in part to enable the measurement and comparison of innovativeness across a variety of activities, disciplines, and contexts. Two companion articles apply and test this theory.This paper is one of three published in series, following a hypothetical deductive approach. This first article lays a theoretical foundation. The second article, “Evaluating Mindset as a Means of Measuring Innovativeness,” explains the creation of an evaluation instrument that applies this theory. A third article, “Innovativeness as a Predictor of Entrepreneurial Value Creation,” uses that instrument to test the theory’s predictive capabilities.

The open innovation paradigm is an important topic of management thought in national innovation systems. Previous studies of open national innovation systems have almost always focused on concepts or theoretical exploration. There is a great lack of integrated frameworks for the process and mechanism of open national innovation systems. Therefore, the research adopts a structural approach and provides an open national innovation model to verify the influence of different mechanisms on open innovation outputs. As well, we argue that open national innovation systems will change over time, as the mechanisms are dynamic, linking, and coexistent. The study adopts a latent growth curve model to verify the growth tendency and progressive change. The policymaker’s perspective of exploring open national innovation systems is important. Building open national innovation capabilities is based on cumulativeness conditions, diffusion capabilities, and international linkages. The results show that cumulativeness conditions and international linkages will positively affect the growth rate of open innovation outputs. Consequently, this study adopts a dynamic experimental map to validate the relationship of the dimensions to provide government with some practical suggestions for making effective policy.

This paper analyzes the influence of intellectual capital on firms’ technological innovation, and the intermediary effect of supply chain learning in the relationship between different dimensions of intellectual capital and technological innovation. Using a questionnaire to survey 167 Chinese high and medium-high technological manufacturing firms, our research provides a new insight with interesting results. (1) Among the four dimensions of intellectual capital, only two dimensions, internal social capital and external social capital, exert positive effect on technological innovation; (2) Among the two dimensions of supply chain learning, learning from both suppliers and customers exerts a significant effect on technological innovation, and learning from the customer has a more significant effect; (3) A complete intermediary effect occurs from supply chain learning in the relationship among human capital, structural capital and technological innovation, while an incomplete intermediary effect occurs from supply chain learning in the relationship among external social capital, internal social capital, and technological innovation.

Though often considered “the weaker sex,” women have led entrepreneurship to a popular phenomenon. Given their unique characteristics, women face different situations and difficulties than men, but they also enjoy unique advantages as entrepreneurs. SWOT analysis is used in this paper to draw a comprehensive evaluation of women from the aspects of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to give some suggestions for entrepreneurial platforms. Finally, a better vision is raised that more research will be proposed to provide theoretical guidance for female entrepreneurship.

Technology innovation capability is a main driver in improving a country’s industrial competitiveness. Development prospects and development speed are strongly dependent on industry innovation capability. Therefore, how to effectively and correctly evaluate the innovation capability of industry is of great importance. On the basis of previous research, this paper establishes an index system for evaluating the technology innovation capability of China’s high-tech industries. The index is characterized by the objective evaluation of objects with measurable indexes. The fuzzy Borda method uses precise digital methods to handle fuzzy evaluation objects; therefore, more scientific and pragmatic quantitative criteria are obtained with qualitative and quantitative evaluation results. This paper is the first attempt to apply the fuzzy Borda combination method to high-tech industry innovation capability evaluation. We establish a fuzzy Borda combination model based on four kinds of single evaluation models. By making a combination evaluation, the disadvantages of a single evaluation method are avoided. In the end, based on the fuzzy Borda combination evaluation model, the real technology innovation data of 2013 is analyzed and the innovation capability of individual industry is ranked, which will provide useful guidance for decision-making administrators.
