This research examines the innovation process that includes sources, development, and uses of innovation in the field of modern biotechnology. Based on the existing literature and primary qualitative data collected from 39 young, small American biotechnology firms, we show how biotechnology innovations constantly cross boundaries of traditionally separate industries. We suggest that biotechnology managers' understanding of innovation processes would benefit from paying attention to the networked nature of sources and uses of innovations, in addition to the collaborative product development process itself.

This paper deals with the development of innovation capabilities inside industrial cluster firms and discusses the relationship between: firms networking with other firms and external partners inside their clusters; and the effects of this networking on the innovation performance of the cluster firms. The paper reports findings from a research study conducted in China's Zhejiang Province, where 212 out of 336 enterprises based in six industrial clusters responded to our questionnaire survey. Our study shows that 'strategic networking' inside clusters improves both product innovation performance and overall speed of the innovation process inside technology-based SMEs, which ultimately effects competitive performance.

This paper uses binary choice model to examine the determinants of product and process innovation in three advanced economies in Central Eastern Europe (CEE): Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. The paper is based on a Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS) conducted by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in 2002 and 2005. Evidence supports Schumpeterian hypothesis that firm size has positive effect while firm age has negative effect on innovation. Foreign ownership, exporting status and organisational flexibility exert positive impact on firm innovation activities. Regarding, external conditions, we find that firms operating in concentrated market and face change in the identity of the main customers are more prone to innovation.

The increasing development of Information Technologies (ITs) and especially Internet significantly affects both firms and markets. In this context, two types of firms appear. Firms with a physical presence (traditional companies) that consider Internet as a new distribution channel or a logical extension of their traditional business, and pure dot.com firms (internet start-ups or cybertraders) that operate solely in this environment. This paper investigates whether entrepreneur's background may constitute a success factor for both cybertraders and traditional firms in Catalonia. Also, the characteristics and profiles of digital and traditional entrepreneurs to identify potential differences in their success factors are compared.
