History and Romance: Fictionality in Charles Brockden Brown
2022 Early American Literature
<p>Abstract:</p><p>Brown's complete corpus offers a perspective on the literary landscape that substantially calls into question two distinctions on which scholars have tended to rely. First, that there was an obvious distinction to be made between fiction and nonfiction; and, second, that there was a manifest difference between the work of authorship and the work of editorship. Brown's correspondence and his domestic and international policy journalism articulate a continuum between fiction and nonfiction, between authorship and editorial curation.</p>
