Although β-diketiminate complexes have been widely explored in stoichiometric studies, their use as catalysts is largely underdeveloped. With growing interest in the catalytic activity of complexes of the first row transition metals, primarily due to the untapped potential of such metal centers, along with the growing global focus on sustainable chemistry with earth abundant metals, this Perspective focuses on the use of β-diketiminate complexes of the first row transition metals as catalysts for the synthesis of small organic molecules.

Boric acid effectively promotes the dehydrogenation of lithium borohydride due to the interactions between protonic and hydridic hydrogen. The simple mixture of LiBH4–(4/3)B(OH)3 can release 5.6 wt% hydrogen below 180 °C with only a trace amount of water, thus constituting a highly attractive single-use hydrogen storage material.

We report the hydroboration of CO2 with catecholborane catalyzed by a series of bis(phosphinite) pincer ligated nickel thiolate complexes. Turnover frequencies (TOFs) up to 2400 h−1 were achieved at room temperature under an atmospheric pressure of CO2. This represents the highest TOF value known to date for the reduction of CO2 to the methoxide level under mild conditions.

Two new adenine derivatives bearing a N-methylene (1) or N-ethylene (2) tethered diphenylphosphine group have been reacted with [MIIICl2Cp*]2 (M = Ir, Rh) or [RuIIClCp*]4. The formation of Werner-type phosphine complexes [3]–[6] and upon heating their subsequent rearrangement into complexes bearing an NH,NR-NHC^PRPh2 chelate ligand in [7]Cl (M = Ir) and [8] (M = Ru) have been observed.
