IT security breaches plague organizations worldwide, yet there continues to be a paucity of comprehensive research models for protective technologies. This study aims to develop an IT security user behavior model focusing on the protective technology anti-spyware which includes organizational climate, a theory of planned behavior (TPB) background variable and elicited salient user beliefs.Design/methodology/approachA multimethod approach, including interviews and a survey, is used to elicit salient user beliefs and test hypotheses of the influences of perceived IT security climate on those user beliefs and ultimately user behavioral intentions. Primary data were collected through interviews following the prescribed TPB methodology and an offline survey method with 254 valid responses recorded. Partial least squares was used to investigate the hypotheses.FindingsThe authors found that attitudinal beliefs – protecting organizational interests for data/privacy, preventing disruptions to work and control beliefs – monetary resources and time constraints mediate significant relationships between IT security climate and attitude and perceived behavioral control, respectively. Implications are discussed.Originality/valueThis study is the first, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, that uses both interviews and a survey to examine the relationships among IT security climate, elicited user beliefs and behavioral intentions in a TPB-based model for a protective technology.

The relevant importance of enterprise architecture (EA) to an organization has gained the attention of the public sector. However, its adoption rate remains slow on the uptake. Thus, this study aims to investigate the various factors associated with adoption intention based on the technological, organizational and environmental framework for federal and state types of public organizations to provide greater predictive accuracy and relevance of EA adoption in Malaysia’s public sector (MPS) context.Design/methodology/approachAn empirical study was conducted through an online survey in Malaysia. Based on 255 samples from public organizations throughout Malaysia, a multigroup analysis with partial least square structural equation modeling was performed to identify the respective influencing factors for adopting EA by federal and state organizations in the Malaysian public sector.FindingsFive organizational factors (clear communication, normative pressure, expected benefit, good governance and organization size) and two environmental factors (coercive pressure and mimetic pressure) were found to be significant factors influencing adoption intention for EA. Additionally, clear communication and coercive pressure were noted to be significant factors influencing adoption for both federal and state organizations. Other significant factors for federal organizations include expected benefit and normative pressure, whereas for state organizations, another significant influencing factor was good governance. The predictive accuracy for federal organizations was slightly higher at 74.6% than that of state organizations, that is, at 65%.Research limitations/implicationsThese findings imply that federal and state organizations respond to different factors that motivate their intention to adopt EA. These findings guide future intentional practice and ensure greater motivation for EA adoption.Practical implicationsThe identification of specific factors that matter to the federal and state public organizations in driving intention to adopt EA in this study has provided significant information that could help in effective decision-making process for these organizations. Common strategies that emphasize on clear communication and coercive pressure can be applied to address EA adoption processes for both federal and state public organizations. Further to that, more specified strategies such as highlighting expected EA benefits and instilling good governance work more effectively for federal and state, respectively.Originality/valueThis study has provided a more extensive view of EA adoption in MPS by differentiating the discerning factors based on the technological–organizational–environmental framework significant for federal and state types of organizations. Hence, this could help in formulating strategies specified to the organization type and ensure greater success in EA adoption in both federal and state organizations.

The purpose of this study is to explore the dimensions of technology on which information technology (IT) professionals assess and evaluate a given technology. The authors believe that these dimensions influence their career outcomes and hold the potential to explain the intent to leave among IT professionals.Design/methodology/approachThis study hypothesizes that the likelihood of a given technology being assessed favorably depends on various technology features perceived by IT professionals. These features influence their career prospects, thus influencing work outcomes like turnover intention. This study uses a survey-based quantitative technique to test the proposed research model. Data has been recorded from 312 IT professionals working in different service-based IT firms.FindingsThe findings of this study indicate that the technology IT professionals work with impacts their work and career-related outcomes. IT professionals evaluate and understand technology to assess the favorability of these technologies. Individual preferences to work with a specific technology are driven by that technology's possible influence on career outcomes such as the availability of job opportunities.Research limitations/implicationsThis study proposes that assigned technology influences career outcomes among IT professionals and has a potential to explain their turnover intentions. The authors have found that technologies fulfilling their career expectations, such as better work opportunities and job security, might be favorable for IT professionals. Unmet expectations with the assigned technology affect the turnover intention among IT professionals. Though this study examines turnover intention as an outcome, future studies can explore the attributes of technology relevant to IT professionals and their impact on other significant consequences such as work exhaustion and job satisfaction.Practical implicationsWith a growing attrition rate and significant demand for skilled IT professionals, the importance of studying their behavior has become essential for both academia and the industry. Despite ample research, there is still a gap between theory and practice. This study on IT professionals proposes that understanding technology and how it is perceived, understood and evaluated by IT professionals might provide significant insights into their work behavior.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature by describing the unexplored phenomenon of the impact of technology assignment on IT professionals' work outcomes. This study is valuable in exploring a new dimension to explain turnover intention.

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the adoption of smartwatches. Specifically, the robustness of the perceived characteristics of innovation (PCI) model in predicting such adoption is demonstrated. Previous smartwatch research has not used this same technology adoption model. This research demonstrates the value of examining the adoption of wearables and other new technologies (i.e. smartwatches) with the new approach of PCI while avoiding some of the limitations of previous studies.Design/methodology/approachA survey of 178 respondents was conducted, and the data was analyzed using structured equation modeling and partial least squares. The model described here extends the models used in extant smartwatch research by identifying additional factors.FindingsThe results show that three factors (compatibility, trialability and relative advantage) significantly impact behavioral intention to adopt the technology.Originality/valueWith the escalation of remote work, the increase in wearable technology and the widespread use of Wi-Fi technology, the way that employees adopt and use their technology must be reassessed. Therefore, a new approach was sought with an established theoretical base to evaluate the adoption of smartwatches under these evolving circumstances. Specifically, Moore and Benbasat’s characterization of the PCI was selected, which is rooted in Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory.
