Abstract This two-part article reports on a nationwide survey of the purposes, priorities, major activities, and organizational patterns of twenty-two university-based research centers affiliated with graduate schools of social work (SWRCs). The second part of the article offers specific recommendations for the further development of SWRCs and provides specific suggestions for solving current staffing and financial difficulties. Abstract Although the social work profession has expressed a commitment to equal opportunity in employment for women, this study notes that inequities in salary and status still exist between male and female social workers. A major cause of these differences appears to be the process of promotion within public agencies, which introduces inequities early in the careers of social workers. Abstract Since deinstitutionalization has become a feature of many state and county mental health programs, suitable and effective measures are needed for evaluating the success of patients in adjusting to community life. This study attempted to identify the factors linked with satisfactory adjustment or return to the hospital and evaluated the usefulness of various measures of success in the community. Abstract The use of least-squares regression for the multivariate analysis of data from applied social research may frequently result in inadequate or incorrect interpretations because of the problem of outliers. Developments in the field of mathematical statistics, however, indicate that a family of robust statistical procedures can protect against the limitations of least-squares regression with applied data.
