The human aspects of JIT implementation

Nils G. Storhagen

1995 International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management

doi: 10.1108/09600039510083871

The principles behind just‐in‐time have long been recognized in the Western world. However, implementation in the West has not achieved full potential. This indicates uncertainty and a lack of knowledge in the West. Based on a comparison of 52 Japanese companies, indicates that the Western world has been using the wrong set of tools and that a reversed profile of competence is apparent. Shows that Western industries have neglected the process factors – the human factors.

Future directions for logistics in Australia

Peter Gilmour; Helen Driva; Robert A. Hunt

1995 International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management

doi: 10.1108/09600039510083880

The practice of logistics management has changed from an operational concern with the elemental activities to a strategic interest in how effective logistics management can help reach corporate objectives. Recent Australian government policy has emphasized world competitiveness and Australia′s place in the Asian trade bloc. Management rubric advocates strategic alliances with customers, suppliers and even competitors. Surveys a group of 86 practising logistics managers to establish the issues which they think will be important for the future direction of their logistics operations. Examines the impact of environmental pressures, changing power relationships in the logistics channel, the use of technology, the global marketplace, uses of outsourcing and the reduction in the cycle time to market. The result is a rather inward‐looking orientation – a focus on the strategy and activities of their own organization operating in the domestic market.

Current purchasing practices and JIT: some of the effects on inbound logistics

Mark Vonderembse; Michael Tracey; Chong Leng Tan; Edward J. Bardi

1995 International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management

doi: 10.1108/09600039510083899

The volume of cargo shipped just‐in‐time (JIT) in the USA has been increasing over the last decade. At the same time, purchasing has been undergoing transformations. Examines empirically the effects of both these trends on the purchasing function, and consequently on inbound logistics, and reports on them in four sections: criteria for supplier selection, changes in purchasing practices, purchasing′s interaction levels with other functional areas and with vendors, and strategic partnerships regarding suppliers. Also examines the impacts on purchasing and inbound logistics in terms of performance. The findings indicate that purchasing is experiencing modifications and that JIT acts as a positive influence. The changes taking place are improving competitive position without an increase in logistics expense.

The realities of operating in Mexico: an exploration of manufacturing and logistics issues

Stanley E. Fawcett; John C. Taylor; Sheldon R. Smith

1995 International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management

doi: 10.1108/09600039510083907

The growth of production‐sharing activities in Mexico has highlighted the need to explore the nature and competitive impact of production sharing. Presents and discusses some of the experiences firms can expect to encounter in Mexican operations. Uses an interview methodology to collect data regarding key manufacturing and logistics issues. Chooses to take an integrated approach that looks at both manufacturing and logistics at the same time because important cost and performance trade‐offs exist that influence the long‐term attractiveness of Mexican operations. Discovers tremendous diversity existing in almost all operating areas and that progress is being made towards the establishment of world‐class logistics and manufacturing practices.
