The study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of neurolept-anaesthesia (NLA) for major abdominal and thoracic surgery. A standard technique, in which thiopentone-tubocurarine-nitrous oxide-oxygen was supplemented with intravenous levorphanol, was compared with four other techniques involving the use of various combinations of the drugs commonly used inNLA, i.e. fentanyl and droperidol.

Oxalic acid excretion was measured in nine patients receiving methoxyflurane and six patients receiving halothane. Oxalic acid excretion increased from 5 to 23 times in the immediate postoperative period in patients receiving methoxyflurane, whereas no increase was noted in those receiving halothane. Despite the striking increase in oxalic acid excretion, no alteration in renal function and no polyuric state developed. The renal failure that occasionally develops after methoxyflurane anaesthesia appears to be multifactorial in origin and a hyperoxaluric state may play a role in some instances.

Nous avons utilisé un appareil d’une grande simplicité pour faire la compression d’une artère à la suite d’une ponction artérielle. Cet appareil permet de maintenir la compression pour un temps choisi et se dégonfle automatiquement au bout de cet intervalle.

In an effort to find a convenient method of humidifying anaesthetic gases being administered to infants by endotracheal tube, a number of commonly available nebulizers were investigated. Their effectiveness was determined in a simulated tracheal situation. The problems of their practical application are discussed.

Study of swine indicates that post-traumatic SCh-induced hyperkalaemia is related not to the type of trauma per se but to trauma-induced abnormalities in muscle. Three groups of swine were studied: normal controls, thermal-trauma swine, and sciatic-section swine. The normal control and the thermal-trauma swine reacted similarly to SCh, with an immediate increase in arterial serum K of approximately 0.5 mEq/liter. Denervated swine responded to SCh with a significantly greater increase; simultaneous femoral venous samples indicated that the source of the K was the denervated leg. These findings are discussed in terms of the responses of human burn and trauma patients to SCh.

Deep sedation and a laissez faire attitude occurs in cats when Innovar is placed into the posterior hypothalamus, the centro-median thalamic nucleus and the ventropostero-lateral thalamic nucleus through precise stereotaxically implanted recording cannulae. This sedation persists in the presence of pin-prick stimulation as observed by the persistence of neocortical deactivation and hippocampal activation or seizures.
