As the concept of “embedded librarianship” is gaining acceptance globally, and a surplus amount of literature is available for the aspiring practitioners, it would be supplementary to carry out such a literature review and bring alike and crucial works together within one piece of writing. This paper aims to gather realistic instances in LIS literature, where embedded librarianship has been practiced successfully.Design/methodology/approachWhile the focus of this review paper is on embedded librarians in curricular contexts, the phrase embedded librarian has a variety of meanings, including librarian involvement and integration at the macro levels such as college, department, programme, research team and micro levels such as course designing, semester assignments and competitive preparation etc. List of relevant literatures was collected from Scopus and LISTA database. Later, full text of the listed document was retrieved from different sources. But the literature that included practical role of an embedded librarian was prioritised and the one which incorporated proposed theories was excluded, and hence, 67 of them were found to be fitted for reviewing purpose in the current case.FindingsWhile planning for any extensional service besides the usual housekeeping ones, a vigorous transformation in the attitude has to be engulfed. Though the conception of embedded librarianship as a whole is an extended version of service deliverance, it can be alienated into sections according to the contextual outline and areas of embedding such as in the research context, pedagogical participation and offering information literacy.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper provides a panoramic view on the emerging notion of this extended version of librarianship. By successfully practicing the embedded librarianship model, the user group would be benefited and the professionals could justify the ethics of their professionalism. Embedded librarianship in the university context can be a very important endeavour for the future challenges. The proactive initiatives of the librarian along with a handy support from authorities might ensure continuous and effective partnerships.Originality/valueThis paper is expected to be one of the initial and review articles in the area of embedded librarianship in academics. It is a highly informative paper on embedded librarianship and will be most useful for researchers to refer this paper for individual study and also will promote the academic librarians for taking initiative to work as effective embedded librarians.

PurposeThis paper aims to narrate the success story of Tekena Tamuno Library by harnessing the multi-dimensional advantages of digital repository management, including multiple access to documents, simultaneous use by multiple patrons and effective space management, to address the tug of war that used to ensue between students and circulation staff over retrieval and use of past examinations question papers in the library.Design/methodology/approachThe paper analyzes and reports the situation before and after the creation of Redeemers University e-question bank.FindingsInterpersonal conflicts that often accompanied manual management and circulation of past question papers in the library were removed by the intervention. The circulation area that was often rowdy and noisy prior to digitization is now neat, quiet and alluring to visitors. Patrons now have a good perception of the library and its staff, thereby giving the library good reputation within and outside the university community.Social implicationsThe paper shows that digitization could help to resolve interpersonal conflicts often created by manual management of paper documents in academic libraries.Originality/valueThere is a dearth of literary evidence on how Nigerian libraries digitized past examination question papers. This paper has addressed this gap to some extent.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to summarise a number of presentations at Day 1 of the Internet Librarian International conference, London, UK (16 October 2018). This was the 20th conference in the series, and the three key themes included were the next-gen library and librarian; understanding users, usage and user experience; and inclusion and inspiration: libraries making a difference.Design/methodology/approachThis paper reports from the viewpoint of a first-time attendee of the conference. This summarises the main issues raised by each presentation and draws out the key learning points for practical situations.FindingsThe conference covered a variety of practical ways in which libraries can use technology to support users and make decisions about services. These include developing interactive physical spaces which include augmented reality; introducing “chat-bots” to support users; using new techniques to analyse data; and piloting new ways to engage users (such as coding clubs). A key theme was how we use and harness data in a way that is ethical, effective and relevant to library services.Originality/valueThis conference focussed on practical examples of how library and information services across sectors and countries are innovating in a period of huge change. The conference gave delegates numerous useful ideas and examples of best practice and demonstrated the strength of the profession in adapting to new technologies and developments.
