The downward movement of water in the soil due to 1971 monsoon precipitation and supplemental surface irrigation has been traced at about forty-five sites in Western Uttar Pradesh, using a thin layer of moisture tagged with tritiated water. The tritiated layer was found to move down to different depths at different sites. The movement, averaged over the forty sites is found to be 96 cm, indicating that the average recharge for the year 1971 (a year of normal monsoon) was 21.5 cm of water.

Three problems are posed and their solutions (ranging from complete to partial) described. They are (i) the Hydrogen atom in an intense magnetic field; (ii) the thermodynamics of one-dimensional chain of continuous spins in an external magnetic field interactingvia Heisenberg interaction; and (iii) the pair correlation function in an interactingmaariys electron system. The relevance of these problems and their solution and various aspects of physics are stressed.

It is shown that the ultraviolet divergences encountered in the lowest order perturbation calculations of quantum electrodynamics no longer appear if the theory is expanded so as to include the mu meson, a triplet of heavy axial vector bosons and two heavy polar vector bosons in addition to the electron and photon, and suitably chosen couplings between them are introduced.
