A simple cooling attachment to “Unicam S-35” goniometer has been described. The attachment permits the removal of the camera without disturbing the cooling arrangement. A simple method of growing single crystalsin situ in the goniometer has also been discussed.

Crystals which are hygroscopic or which exist only at low temperatures can be conveniently studied on an optical goniometer with the attachment and method described. The apparatus is simple in design and uses a current of air (or gas) at suitable temperature blowing on the crystal mounted on a goniometer head inside a glass chamber.

The standard heats of combustion of the disubstituted ureas, N, N′-diheptyl urea, N, N′-dioctyl urea and N, N′-didecyl urea and the carbamates,n-heptyl ammoniumn-heptyl carbamate,n-octylammoniumn-octyl carbamate andn-decyl ammoniumn-decyl carbamate have been determined. The values found are 2353±1·3, 2658·4±1·1, 3268·5±1·7, 2349·8±1·6, 2654·4±1·2, 3264·6±1·8, K.cals. mole−1 respectively. The heats of formation of these compounds have been calculated.

A new system of red degraded bands in the 3700–4000 Å region has been obtained in the spectrum of the CuBr molecule excited in an electrodeless discharge tube by a microwave oscillator. The band heads of this system are given by the formula: $$\begin{gathered} v ^{63} Cu ^{79} Br = 25538 \cdot 5 + 281 \cdot 9 \left( {\upsilon ' + \tfrac{1}{2}} \right) - 1 \cdot 35 \left( {\upsilon ' + \tfrac{1}{2}} \right)^2 - 314 \cdot 4 \hfill \\ \left( {\upsilon '' + \tfrac{1}{2}} \right) + 0 \cdot 86 \left( {\upsilon '' + \tfrac{1}{2}} \right)^2 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ . It has been found that the lower electronic state of this system is the same as the common lower state of the three known band systems, which is also the ground state of the molecule.
