In these yet again troubled economic times it is always welcome to see a growth area for the coatings manufacturers. According to IAL Consultants Ltd the consumption of polymeric sealants in the UK, West Germany and France will exceed 200,000 tonnes by 1994. This represents an aggregate growth of 2.7 p.a. from the consumption of some 175,000 tonnes in 1989. However, it is likely that the consumption in 1994 will significantly exceed 200,000 tonnes as a result of the reunification of East and West Germany.

The use of fluoropolymer resin within ambient temperature curing exterior paint finishes for use on aircraft are shown to be a practical and beneficial proposition. Comparison with twocomponent polyester polyurethanes and with acrylic urethanes clearly indicates superior durability in terms of gloss and colour retention.

Reaction of 4amino3thio1,2,4triazolidine with etnylacetoacetate and acetoacetanilide produced 4ethylacetoacetamino3thio, 1,2,4triazolidine and 4acetoacetanilidamino, 3thio1,2,4triazolidine respectively. These were characterised by elemental analysis, 1Rand 1HNMR spectra. Each compound was tested as antifoulant in marine paint formulation in the presence of tributyftin fluoride as a cotoxin. The antifouling behaviour of the compounds was compared with that of the parent one, 4amino3thio1,2,4triazalidine and its condensation products with other aromatic and heterocyclic carbonyl derivatives.

I.C.I.'s Paints Research Centre is responsible for the research and development of an extensive range of decorative and automotive paints for use throughout the world. These paints have to withstand high temperatures and humidities in hot climates, and freezing conditions in the colder regions of the world. To enable the most suitable paint mixture to be achieved, the Research Centre has to simulate worldwide conditions to evaluate their paints.
