SummaryIn a study often families with the basal cell naevus syndrome, epidermoid cysts occurred on the skin in 55%, of affected individuals. The distribution of these cysts, mainly on the limbs, is very similar to that occurring in Gardner's syndrome, but unlike the latter disease the presence of cysts is not helpful in making the diagnosis, nor is it of any prognostic significance.

SummaryIt is recognized that ultraviolet light has a beneficial effect in various inflammatory disorders of the skin. We have used histamine weal and flare as a model testing the effect of ultraviolet light on vascular response. No difference in weal and flare reaction following intradermal injection of 0·01‐10·0 μg of hisiamine was found between covered and exposed skin following UV radiation or photochemotherapy (PUVA).

SummaryIngrowing toe‐nails in children and adults cause a considerable degree of morbidity. Much has been written about the treatment but very little attention has been paid to the basic anatomical and pathological factors causing the phenomenon. We wish to report thirty cases in which congenital malalignment of the nail apparatus is the basic abnormality. In this condition the nail plate is deviated laterally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the distal phalanx. We have devised a simple operation which corrects the deformity and prevents subsequent ingrowing and the hemionychogryphosis which is often the long‐term problem in untreated cases.

SummaryA 67‐year‐old woman with generalized eruptive histiocytoma since 1973 and type IV hyperlipidaemia, which was corrected by diet alone, is presented. Michaelis‐Gutmann (MG) bodies, usually characteristic but not specific for malakoplakia, were identified and confirmed ultrastructurally in one earlier biopsy but not in the subsequent skin lesions. This case differs clinically and pathologically from xanthomas secondary to type IV hyperlipidaemia, and malakoplakia of the skin. The pathogenesis of the MG bodies in this case is unknown.

SummaryThis report describes six patients with Features of both chronic discoid lupus erythematosus (DIE) and lichen planus (LP). All patients showed chronic, livid, partly atrophic LE‐like lesions, preferentially located on the head, the face and the upper trunk.Reticular, whitish patches were found in the oral mucosa of five patients. In addition, papulo‐nodular, verrucous lesions and lichenoid papules were present in some of these cases. The histopathological and immunopathological findings in these lesions are discussed in detail. It is concluded that some of our patients have a coexistence of both diseases while others suffer from an unusual variant of CDLE. We do not support the suggestion that this ‘mixed LP‐LE disease’ should be considered as a distinct entity.

SummaryA case of Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler infection of die knee in a 48‐year‐old farmer who had bilateral adrenocotical hyperplasia (Cushing's syndrome) is presented. The lesion appeared following a minor trauma sustained during the harvesting of wheat. The patient was successfully treated with intralesional infiltrations of miconazole.

SummaryThree patients with malignant acanthosis nigricans who presented with widespread warty lesions arc reported. Although many of the lesions appeared similar to viral warts, no evidence supporting a viral aetiology could be found by light or electron microscopy. These cases illustrate a potentially misleading presentation of an important marker of internal malignancy.
