The automatic visual sensing of aerosol sprays has many advantages over alternative techniques. This article suggests various measurements which could form the basis of an inspection system and illustrates their use on sprays produced by a can of furniture polish. The extension of these ideas to other applications is also discussed.

Sira Institute, the R & D establishment for scientific and industrial measurement has set up its own company, Ometron Ltd., to manufacture and market products which would not otherwise be exploited. Its first product is equipment for studying cyclic stresses by the minute temperature changes which they cause. Peter Hunt, general manager of Ometron, and Martin Webber of Sira who was responsible for the development of the technique, talked to Sensor Review.

The advent of low cost miniature solid state cameras now makes eyeinhand robot vision a practical possibility. This paper discusses the advantages of eyeinhand vision and shows that with the Unimation VAL operating system it is easier to use than is possible with static overhead cameras.

Tactile array sensor systems have a number of capabilities which make them very applicable to industrial robot systems. Work on their development and the interpretation of the sensor data applicable to flexible assembly automation systems is now being carried out in a SERC collaborative project between Sussex University, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Thorn EMI Central Research Laboratories.
