This article describes a classroom exercise that isdesigned to demonstrate the applicability of attribution theories to performance diagnosis. Specifically, itshows how three information cues (consistency, consensus, and distinctiveness) may be used by a supervisor in determining the cause of a performance problem. These three cues provide comparisons acrosstime, people, and tasks and are presented graphicallyin the exercise. Courses for which the exercise mayapply include organizational behavior, personnel,managerial decision-making, and operationsmanagement.
