Dust concentration and turbulence measurements are basic and important measurements in process industry for dust explosion prevention and protection. In this paper' principles of measurement, measured data of dust concentration and flow field from large scale test site and factories under real working conditions, dust concentration and turbulence patterns are presented, and a method of determination of characteristics of dust cloud formation was introduced.

A pulverized coal processing system for producing coal powder used in aluminum alloy smelting process was introduced. The explosibility of the coal used in the system was measured, and the hazards of the process were analyzed. Explosion prevention and protection methods applied in the process were described including atmospheric inerting, powder inerting and venting. Atmospheric inerting is the main method to prevent dust explosions in this process. Process monitoring and control are parts of explosion protection in combustible powder manufacture. Process parameters such as temperatures and concentrations of CO and O2 are monitored by a distributed data acquisition and control system. Spontaneous combustion of coal is the most possible ignition source, and CO monitoring is an effective method to detect spontaneous combustion. Experiences show that, auto-ignition may occur in the drying system when CO concentration is above 500 ppm. When the oxygen concentration is controlled at less than 5%, there will be no explosion hazard in the coal pulverization and drying process.

This paper elaborated the working principle on moisture-content analysis of one sided capacitance sensors. The influence of size and space of plates on the measure depth is compared and researched through some theoretical analysis and experiments. The relation between the measure signal moisture content and measure depth by the capacitance gauging circuit is obtained.

This paper describes the performance of electrostatic meters for measuring and controlling pulverised fuel on coal-fired power plant. Typical data obtained from on-line measurements of pulverised fuel (PF) flow in a large-scale power plant demonstrate how the system can be used to measure the fuel velocity and distribution (spilt) to indicate the conveying conditions in each individual conveyor. Results from laboratory tests carried out on a bifurcating system show that the split between two conveyors can be balanced by controlling the back pressure with PF meters providing on-line feedback of mass flow measurements. Based on the results, some of the immediate benefits of continuous PF metering are discussed showing the potential to increase plant efficiency by optimising the fuel distribution to the burners.
