Although making specific reference to pharmaceutical production the problems and principles described apply to a wide variety of industries, and may therefore be of general interest. In the spirit of technology transfer the paper is deliberately written in ‘mid-Atlantic’ English.The author is a specialist engineer within the Project Unit of a major UK-based pharmaceutical company, which operates a broadly decentralised management structure.
