Algebraic expressions are given for some critical jump-resonance curves in feedback systems containing one nonlinearity. The usual describing-function approximation is employed, and the following nonlinearities are considered: a) linear plus (2n + 1)th power, b) saturation with hysteresis, c) dead zone, d) backlash.

The basic criteria for development of a suitable per cent moisture gauge for paper are discussed and the paper industry requirements analysed. The theory of operation for the infra-red gauge is explained and the various components of the system described at length. Installation methods for fixed point and traversing mechanisms are set forth. The significance of the calibration technique being used is discussed. A wide range of current installations is described and the extension of applications on the paper machine suggested.

As part of a study into the computerised automation of paper machines we have begun to investigate the problem of paper humidity and control. The first results and reflections thereon are given below.The pilot unit is equipped with two gauges: one at the dry end, of the conventional capacitive type, with co-planar electrodes in contact with the sheet, the other at the wet end, which is also based on the variation of the dielectric constant but with two opposed heads and no contact.
