Improved consistency control depends upon a better understanding of fluid flow theory insofar as it affects consistency measurement. Classical theories, including the boundary layer theory are examined, also principles of rheology for relevance to paper stock flow in general and the behaviour of stock when flowing past a stationary plate or rod obstruction. The performance of the Foxboro model 19C consistency transmitter is explained in the light of this theoretical background.
