Electronic paths to resource sharing Widening opportunities through the Internet

Engle, Mary E.

1991 Reference Services Review

doi: 10.1108/eb049134

In the early 1980s, Luis Alvarez and his colleagues added a new dimension to Darwin's theory of evolution. With evidence from studies of the earth's crust between the cretacious and tertiary layers, they postulated that the traditional slow, gradual mutation of species over eons was also punctuated with occasional major changes, often catastrophic, that caused leaps in evolution in relatively short moments of history. The extinction of the dinosaurs and half the other animal species alive between the cretacious and tertiary periods of earth's history was one such momentous change, forever altering the evolution of animal species.

Hypermedia and library instruction The challenge of design

Piette, Mary I.; Smith, Nathan M.

1991 Reference Services Review

doi: 10.1108/eb049135

Imagine being able to provide instruction for using online catalogs, indexes, and CDROM databases at library workstations or integrated into online catalogs and CDROM indexes. Hypermedia offers new and exciting opportunities to provide this type of instruction by addressing frames of learning, offering text, simulation, graphics, sound, and movement many ways to learn.

Christopher Columbus A selective guide to literature, 19701989

Metz, Allan

1991 Reference Services Review

doi: 10.1108/eb049136

This is a selective annotated bibliography of the literature on Christopher Columbus from 1970 to 1989. The subject is particularly relevant considering the approach of the Quincentenary of the discovery of America in 1992. For that same reason, there has been an outpouring of literature on the subject since 1990, a significant subset of which contributes to are interpretation of Columbus the man, his voyages, and their impact on the new world. It is hoped that this more recent literature will be part of a subsequent annotated bibliography.

The EPIC experience An assessment of OCLC's New Online System after its first year

Zorbas, Elaine; Whitcomb, Laurie

1991 Reference Services Review

doi: 10.1108/eb049137

The EPIC system continues to evolve since it was first released in January 1990. Initially EPIC offered improved access to OCLC's formidable bibliographic database. Pasadena Public Library's experiences with the system, as one of the six field test sites, were described in a first look article, in January 1990.1 Since then EPIC has added additional databases such as ERIC, ABI Inform, Dissertation Abstracts, Business Dateline, Pharmaceutical News Index, and the GPO Monthly Catalog, as well as opening a gateway to EasyNet. EPIC's growth puts it in the category of a potential competitor to such established systems as DIALOG, BRS, Wilsonline, and others.

Expanding the repertoire of reference

Frantz, Paul

1991 Reference Services Review

doi: 10.1108/eb049141

In the literature of librarianship, the education of a reference librarian has, on the whole, meant two things. First, it has referred to the theoretical andor practical training in reference services that a student receives in library school. Second, it has meant the training, or lack of it, the new librarian receives in making the transition from library school to the reference desk. What reference education has not meant, to judge by the literature, is the ongoing training or professional development a working reference librarian might receive on the job.

Application of training principles and techniques for successful library instruction

Warnken, Paula N.; Young, Victoria L.

1991 Reference Services Review

doi: 10.1108/eb049142

Library instruction has become a public services program at most academic libraries. As such, it has the potential of being a library's most innovative and visible program. Yet, no matter how innovative, such a program cannot become visible without the support of the entire university community. Librarians, administrators, faculty members, and students alike must perceive a need and value for an instructional program if it is to be implemented successfully.
