LUBRICATION of automatic transmissions provides the oil marketers and additive suppliers with a major challenge in terms of fluid development to satisfy the diverse requirements of such units. Fluid development is further complicated by the large number of nonautomotive applications for which automatic transmission fluids ATFs are being used.

TRACTOR sales in major European countries decreases by about 7 per cent in 1984. Figure 1 shows the trend of tractor registrations in individual countries. However tractor population is still growing, even though very slowly, in most countries. Exceptions, where there is faster tractor population growth, are Spain, Italy and Yugoslavia. These trends underate the tractor power available, since smaller and less sophisticated machines are gradually being replaced by larger, more sophisticated ones, with a move to turbocharged fourwheel drive models.
