THROUGHOUT recorded history metals have played an important role in the development of civilised life. In fact they have been used as markers for stages in that development hence the terms bronze age and iron age. We would appear to be still living in what could be called the late steel age. In spite of changes in patterns of metal use we shall stay in this age at least well into the 21st century.

SEVEN years of research and experiment by Sulzer Brothers, of Winterthur, Switzerland, has led to the development of a special diesel engine piston ring assembly embodying a detector component functioning automatically to measure and indicate early phases of ring wear without loss of engine running time incurred by normal inspection routine.

TRIBOLOGY, officially defined as the science of interactive faces in relative motion, must have major significance in the process of metal manipulation by stamping and blanking manufacturing methods. This is especially so where the talent of high technology are simultaneously applied to develop highspeed massproduction by fine blanking to produce, in a single stamping movement, quality components, each one clean sheared, smooth and d imensionally accurate.
