I would like to thank Peter Sinclair for his hospitality on that occasion. " With respect to the analysis of taxation, I am originally a student of Arnold Harberger, and I am grateful for his comments on this paper as well. More recently, I have benefitted from instruction, comments and criticism from Christophe Chamley, Kenneth Judd, Laurence Kothkoff, Kevin M. Murphy, Edward Prescott, Sherwin Rosen, Nancy Stokey and Lawrence Summers. Peter Sinclair and James Mirrlees provided useful comments after the Hicks Lecture, as did Costas Azariadis and Joan Esteban at the June, 1989 Conference in Santander, Spain. Finally, I thank Chi-Wa Yuen both for his comments and his expert assistance. © Oxford University Press

MULTI-PRODUCT COST ATTRIBUTES: A STUDY OF U.K. BUILDING SOCIETIESHARDWICK,, PHILIP

doi: 10.1093/oxfordjournals.oep.a041956
Abstract A translog multi-product cost function is estimated jointly with a derived input cost share equation to obtain estimates of overall economies of scale and ‘augmented’ overall economies of scale for the United Kingdom building society industry. The ‘augmented’ measure takes into account induced changes in the number of building society branch offices as the outputs vary. The parameter estimates are then used to compute the derivatives of the marginal costs of each product to test for product-specific economies of scale and economies of scope.
