The effect of colestipol on fat‐soluble vitamins and folic acid serum levels and calcium metabolism was studied in 23 hypercholesterolemic children treated for 24 months. Serum vitamin A and E concentrations decreased but not to levels associated with deficiency. Monitoring is recommended.

The significance of the complications following jejunoileal bypass surgery is demonstrated by the increasing incidence of late reversal of the surgery and reconstitution of small bowel integrity. Alternative surgical procedures such as gastric plication are equally effective with fewer serious, long‐term complications.

Chronic non‐specific diarrhea in children less than three years of age may be associated with a low intake of dietary fat. The condition can be controlled by increasing the fat content of the diet.

Aluminum hydroxide is consumed widely as an antacid and is believed to be harmless. Recent studies indicate that aluminum is absorbed by the gut and may lead to disorders of the brain and parathyroid gland.

Small bowel resection is followed by mucosal hyperplasia. Hypophysectomy causes small bowel hypoplasia independent of food intake. Gut adaptation to resection occurs in hypophysectomized animals but is less than in pair‐fed controls.

The activity of δ‐aminolevulinate dehydratase, a zinc‐dependent enzyme, requires the sulfhydryl groups of cysteine residues at the active site. Zinc functions in the maintenance of the reduced SH groups, but is not essential for activity of the enzyme.
