Cast iron is a complex system comprising about ten elements that determine the properties of the interphase and intergrain boundaries, and the specific features of the crystal structure of the matrix and nonmetallic inclusions. One way of solving the problem of crystallization of nonmetallic inclusions in cast iron and the mechanism of formation of composite metastable carbides consists in investigating the special features of the distribution of chemical elements in various phases. The present work is part of a complex studyaimed at obtaining cast irons with a specified composition in order to determine nonmetallic inclusions synthesized as a result of shock compression.

A roll is the basic rolling tool whose stability determines the technical and economical parameters of operation of rolling mills and the time of their continuous operation between replacements of the rolls, their output, the stability of operation, the quality and cost of products, the loss to rejects, and the specific consumption of the roll material. Despite the ample investigations, the problem of increasing the endurance of roll steels and creating high-quality working and backup rolls is still urgent, because its solution will save expensive roll tools. This is a complex problem because the durability of rolls depends on a great number of metallurgical, design, technological, and operational parameters.

Turbine, compressor, and rotor disks are critical elements of an aircraft engine. The repeated heating and cooling to which the disks are subjected during operation cause an accumulation of plastic deformation and development of fatigue rupture. Therefore, it is important to know in what way the nickel alloys lose strength and fail in the process of long-term operation at high temperatures. The aim of the present work is to investigate the effect of various structural parameters on the processes of deformation and rupture of high-temperature nickel alloys used for disks of gas-turbine engines under conditions close to the operating ones.

Using computer programs some foreign firms have developed new deformable and castable high-temperature nickel-base alloys such as IN, Rene, Mar-M, Udimet, TRW, TM, TMS, TUT, with equiaxial, columnar, and single-crystal structures for manufacturing functional and nozzle blades and other parts of the hot duct of transport and stationary gas-turbine installations (GTI). Similar investigations have been carried out in Russia. This paper presents examples of the use of the PSCPCSP computer software for a quantitative analysis of structural und phase characteristics and properties of industrial alloys with change (within the grade range) in the concentrations of the alloying elements for optimizing the composition of the alloys and regimes of their heat treatment.

The fracture of specimens from a Ni3Al intermetallic compound is investigated in the 20 – 1200°C temperature range in tests for short-term strength. The dependence of the fracture on the mechanical properties of the alloy is analyzed.

Though very expensive, high-speed steels are widely used in the industry. It is very important to decrease the cost of tools from high-speed steel and increase their service life. Polish specialists have developed new steels with economical chemical compositions and efficient technologies for their chemicothermal treatment. The Institute of Precision Mechanics has developed a high-speed steel (of SM5 provisory grade) with a diminished content of carbon. Such steel is used in tools produced by the method of plastic deformation and die stamping under an impact load, and also for large-size tools. This article presents the technological and operating properties of this steel and its heat treatment regimes.
