WHILE SO MUCH remains to be done on the lives of librarians who were truly eminent, it may seem perverse to explore the career of a librarian who was in no way outstanding. But the character of an age may sometimes be revealed as well by the lives of the obscure as by those of the great, and that is my main reason for returning to the life of Henry Bond.

DRAGONS represent times far away and marvellous, where none of the ordinary workaday worries can torment mankind. In DragonLand there are turreted castles, feasts of nightingale tongues, and pomegranates served in golden bowls. Here all men are the bravest of knights, victorious in battle and love, and all women are beautiful and gentle, and wait for lovers in hidden gardens of roses and lime trees, the while they weave tapestries of unicorns and wyverns.

IN 1947 JAMES HOGG'S NOVEL The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner was republished with an enthusiastic introduction by Andr Gide. Gide wrote that he had read the novel with a stupefaction and admiration that increased at every page, but nevertheless he was unable to find a cultured Englishman, American or Frenchman who had read the book or knew anything about its author. Since 1947 Hogg's novel has won a high reputation, a reputation which has been further enhanced by its recent publication in the Oxford English Novels series.

FOR MANY YEARS the editorial library has been something of a Cinderella of the profession. A little aside from the main stream of library development, preferring press cutting to books as sources, most of them nevertheless provide an efficient current information service with economy, scarcely changed in their essentials for fifty years. All the more interesting then that computer developments may one day place the newspaper library in the forefront of automated library systems.
