Researchers have demonstrated links between general hope and symptoms of distress. Findings like these are important given the conceptual role of hope in psychotherapy theories like Frank and Frank’s contextual model. Existing literature, however, has involved researchers employing general hope measures despite hope being variable across domains rather than a general trait. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between hope for counseling and clients’ outcomes as well as the working alliance. Self-report data were collected from 103 clients in a doctoral training clinic. Evidence (from multilevel modeling) demonstrated that increases in working alliance predict increases in hope for counseling over the course of treatment and that increases in hope for counseling significantly predict decreases in distress over the course of counseling when working alliance and session number are controlled. We discuss implications for clinical practice and positively-oriented work in counseling psychology.

Trans individuals experience unique stressors related to their careers, such as discrimination, workplace harassment, navigating transition, and disclosure of their identity. The current study examined the experiences of 30 trans graduate students with regard to career decision-making. In total, 19 identified as at least one nonbinary identity and 11 were binary trans-identified (trans men and trans women). Thematic analysis of in-depth interview transcripts revealed the following major themes: (a) Role of Gender Minority Stress During Graduate School in Career Development, (b) Key Considerations Related to Future Jobs or Career Paths (e.g., whether fields or specific jobs are trans-friendly), (c) Outness as a Key Consideration in the Job Application Process, and (d) the Role of Resources and Supports in Career Development. Our findings highlight the unique stressors for trans individuals in the career decision-making and job application processes and the unique challenges faced by nonbinary job seekers.

This 2021 presidential address focuses on Mary O'Leary Wiley's theme for 2020-2021, It Takes a Village: Engaging with Solidarity in Practice, Anti-Black Racism Work, Advocacy, and Education. She traces the threads that led to her presidential vision in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened awareness of systemic racism, and details the contributions of many Society of Counseling Psychology members who contributed to our progress throughout the year. She discusses ways that counseling psychologists practice in ways that are different from many other psychologists in that they emphasize the environmental and prevention contexts, which lay the intellectual groundwork for psychologists engaging in social justice initiatives.

The University of Missouri–Columbia’s (MU) counseling psychology program was selected to host the Student Affiliates of Seventeen (SAS) Executive Board from 2019–2022 and is currently in the second year of its tenure. The purpose of this report is to review and evaluate the work of the SAS Executive Board at MU in 2020–2021. The report details the rationale for and initial transition to a hybrid national model for an executive board for the remainder of the tenure. This report also reviews the purpose of SAS, discusses the selection of a theme for 2020–2021, and shares highlights and programming updates related to the four pillars: (a) Excellence and Innovation, (b) Growth and Sustainability, (c) Justice and Equity, and (d) Wellness and Positive Development. The SAS tri-chairs close the report with a brief reflection on their service amidst the pandemics of COVID-19, anti-Black racism and police brutality, and a multitude of other injustices targeted at minoritized groups who hold non-White ethnic and racial identities.
