WE are becoming increasingly exercised over the continuance of a trend in connexion with commercial transport aircraft to which we have, in fact, called attention in the past.

THE study of the vibration of a straight elastic bar is a very old one. The vibrations may be classified as lateral or transverse torsional and longitudinal. The first two are the more important ones and also the more difficult. We shall consider the lateral and torsional vibrations of a bar clamped at one end and free at the other, which may rotate like the blades of an airscrew. Both cases, rotation or none, are important problems of civil engineering, marine and aeronautical engineering and the theory of elasticity.

THE work described in this paper was undertaken to investigate the behaviour of a magnesium alloy beam clastically and plastically deformed by a uniform bending moment at room temperature. The object of the work was to obtain relations between stresses and strains in the beam, to afford a basis for design, in cases where it is required to submit magnesium alloy structures to bending stresses exceeding the elastic limit.

BEFORE the war scientific filtration as applied to aircraft was a little known subject. The prime concern of the people developing aircraft in those days was the attainment of higher power output, ceiling and maximum speed. More streamlining was the cry and, although filters were available, they were rarely used.

NETWORKS of the type considered are of practical importance as components of automatic control systems and similar devices. The electrical variety is exemplified by the wellknown phaseadvance network, while analogous arrangements of dashpots and springs arc often used to obtain the same effect.

Mr Rissik needs little introduction to engineers, least of all to readers of Aircraft Engineering, since much that is contained in his latest book on Quality Control was foreshadowed in articles published in this Journal during the war years.
